Crestview Farm is located near a small village of Princeton, PA. This is located in Northwest Pennsylvania. We began raising these unique animals in the Spring of 2000. We are members of the International Texas Longhorn Association (ITLA). We meet a lot of good hearted honest people there. We started out purchasing fifteen heifers. We leased an Artificially Inseminated {AI} Bull from Cowcatcher for two years. His name was Rascal. We used our two year old Bull (CF Red Rocket) from Rascal out of a Tabasco daughter (Vanna) for two years. We leased a Bull named (Unslammed) out of Unlimited for two years. We also used our Bull (CF Lady's Man) for two years. He was a son of "The Shadow". Currently we are using a Shadow son CF Shazam. Both Shazam and LM were born and raised here. Our latest edition would be our yearling bull out of a sire named Zhivago. We hope to use him for breeding in the Spring of 2010. Constantly striving to improve and obtain quality genetics, we now have over 90 cattle in our herd. Fencing, watering, etc. will always be an on going process. We have developed many Natural Spring sources. This enables us to have moving water in several locations. This helps in the Spring and Summer months for Rotational Grazing. Moving water will not freeze in Winter months. I also built a Hydraulic Ram pump to lift water from a pond to non-spring developed areas. Hydraulic Ram uses nature's force of moving water to operate the pump. Electricity is not needed for this type of system. We also developed a Solar Water Project for watering cattle during Spring and Summer months. Working together with PA DEP, NRCS, NW Project Grass, and Penn Soil RC&D; we now have watering troughs in several other pastures or "paddocks". Water is pumped from a cistern tank using the sun's energy to large reserve tanks. The reserve tanks hold over 6,000 gallons. The tanks then gravity feed several watering troughs. We can now have longer rest periods on our pastures during Rotational Grazing. Cattle do not have to cross a previously grazed field to get water. This system is shut down and drained during Winter months. Cattle are then contained in areas where there is moving water or frost free type watering troughs. Then we use only hay bales for supplemental feeding.
Texas Longhorns are a "free range" cattle. During the Spring, Summer, and Fall our herd is left to graze. We use a Tine Type Harrow to "drag" the fields after moving the herds. This helps the pastures during rest periods. Hay rings and wagons are moved quite frequently in the Winter months. This reduces cattle standing in same place for extended periods of time. Texas Longhorn beef is naturally lean and contains a very low fat content. All meats are very flavorful when properly cooked. However, Grass Finished Texas Longhorn Beef has a flavor second to none. Since fat acts as an insulator when cooking, less fat requires lower cooking temperatures. The cattle here at Crestview are Grass and Hay fed. We use NO hormones, steroids, or growth implants of ANY kind. (See "FYI" Nutrition for more information) Our ground beef includes all select cuts meaning: Roasts, Fillets, Chuck, Sirloin, etc. The finished product being very lean and tasty. It is USDA inspected and packaged locally. Quality is our #1 goal. Check availability for our sides, quarters, and whole beef.
